Planting Process: Cold Stratification

From 9/20/2021 to 9/23/2021 I separated the Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) seeds from their pods to get started on the process of Cold Stratification. I picked these pods from Up Yonda Farm on 9/18/2021 (43.576109, -73.655397). Cold Stratification is where seeds are exposed to cold treatment for an extended period of time (to replicate winter) in which you break the seed's dormancy to increase its ability to germinate. I put 25 milkweed seeds wrapped in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag (labeled with the time, date, amount of seeds, and number of

days the stratification process would take) and put it in the fridge. I collected and separated 343 seeds in total!
